Biden, Rashoo, Oil and Rwanda
Change is in the wind and its not just the Autumn's leaves cascading
The leaves have turned colour and at least here in Britain the recent storms have meant there was too little time to enjoy the colors as they're littered all over the ground. Like the much awaited bloom of Liz Truss' somewhat extreme libertarian state which, let’s face it, got a bit of a crushing under the weight of the overly eager introduction of her (or was it Kwasi’s??) plans (per the hard core libertarians of the party) not the content (per the Bank of England, the markets, and Rishi Sunak).
I guess she thought she'd get a honeymoon, enough time to make real the ultimate Ayn Rand fest. Lower taxes, stripped regulations and to hell with the populace. (all covered with a placating, if shortened, save on energy prices.)
But the markets roared, the Tories knifed each other in the back and Liz joined a host of others on the bonfires of boosterised Brexit promises. Replaced by a kinder, gentler hindu gentleman (a 'migrant' in houndstooth and a posh accent as one virulent Brexiter described him). Tosser (not Sunak).
Let's see what Sunak does but his white paper on freeports as the solution to economic woes written only 6 years ago stirs a few concerns about how much original thinking is going on. The fact that when city bankers were asked what he was like as a banker all they said was he was impeccably dressed gives pause. Perhaps not for Moss Bros.
Rishi is acceptable to the MP's because he's quiet, studious, and, per chance, a billionaire. Which can only help given how broke the rest of the country is. As Prime Minister what will he do? Who knows. Staying would be achievement enough at this point.
But as it seems he just out Machievalied Cincinnatus I'd say he stands a chance, but that's another article. And, well, best of luck to him. Perhaps a little less of Coffey's broad shoulders, Rees Moggs ancient sharp elbows and Braverman's proud celebration of reverse-trafficking and we might bear the next year or so.
And to all those pesky journalists and observers asking if that means the markets run the country not the tories I say - it's always about the money! The only thing (not a small thing mind you) they've changed in the program is the taxes part. Worse for all of us. Better for the bankers, er, the money.
Even as I wrote these words it seems Rees Moggs' libertarian fever dream regulation sunset bill carries on. So we'll see Starmer running on the inevitable cuts to services, but even more the unregulated sewage water running into British rivers, genetically modified chickens, employer/employee relations changed on a whim or whatever other overlooked regulation that has set with the sun, disappeared in the ether much like Rees Mogg at that point because apparently Somerset is a bit sick of him - and who in their right mind would want to pass their own bill.
Meanwhile, Braverman has been reappointed (I doth hear the ching of the register - a repayment for a strategic resignation) as Home Secretary. And why not, Rwanda is a lovely place in winter. Even Coffey has landed on her feet as Minister of something or other. Oh environment - such a trivial affair…
In the US the leaves have hung on longer and Halloween is here. Time for the annual TV showing of The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.
The US system gives voice to the electorate every two years. But it seems the voters, like the sweet and ever hopeful Charlie Brown, are falling back in love with the idea of the Great Pumpkin coming to save them and is going to hoist the Trumpists back in. Because, well, because gas prices of course. And Biden is old. The papers shout he congratulated "Rashoo Sanook" yesterday because he's hard of hearing (aka old). .. he keeps releasing those oil reserves to get prices down. But he can’t keep up. OPEC and Putin are one step ahead of him, cutting production. And he can’t stop them. Why? Because he's, well, less than young.
Apparently as Brits like slow and steady and tradition the Americans like to pull it all down. So January 6 was normal and election deniers are righteous and the House should be in ' blow up the President' mode.
Ahhh, there's nothing like a good fight over the debt limit in the morning and shutting down the government in the evening to sell a newspaper, Mr. Murdoch. Rest up over Christmas so you're ready on January 1st when the new Congress begins it's work. After all, fireworks are beautiful.....
